According to the National Institutes of Health patient weight status may be classified as follows:

BMI
Weight Status
Below 18.5 Kg/m2
Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Kg/m2
Normal
25.0 – 29.9 Kg/m2
Overweight
30.0 – 34.9 Kg/m2
Obese
35.0 – 39.9 Kg/m2
Severely Obese
40.0 Kg/m2 or more
Morbidly Obese

Nevertheless an individual Body Mass Index is not the only indicator for Bariatric Surgery. Therefore an adequate evaluation of the patient by the physician is necessary in order to determine whether or not a person is a good candidate for this type of surgery.
